How to prepare for your tattoo session
How to prepare for your tattoo session
A customer’s guide to a smooth, comfortable experience
Getting a tattoo is an exciting moment, but a good experience doesn’t start when the needle touches the skin. It starts before you even arrive at the studio. Preparing your body and mind properly will help you feel better, sit longer, heal faster, and enjoy the whole process much more.
Here’s how to get ready for your tattoo session.
1. Rest well the night before
A good night’s sleep makes a huge difference. When you’re well-rested, your body handles stress and pain better, your blood sugar is more stable, and you’ll feel calmer overall.
Try to avoid staying up late and give yourself the chance to arrive relaxed and refreshed.
2. Eat a healthy, solid meal
Don’t come on an empty stomach, but also don’t overeat.
A balanced meal with proteins, carbs, and healthy fats will help keep your energy steady during the session. Think of something nourishing and satisfying, not too heavy, but not too light either.
This helps prevent dizziness, weakness, and fatigue.
3. Stay hydrated (before, during, and after)
Water is your best friend.
Drink enough water in the days leading up to your appointment, and keep sipping during the session and afterward. Hydration supports your skin, your circulation, and your overall comfort.
4. Avoid alcohol and drugs
Alcohol and drugs are a very bad idea before and during a tattoo session.
They can:
• Increase bleeding
• Make pain harder to manage
• Affect your healing
• Put your safety at risk
(And yes… they’re not great for you in general either 😅)
Come sober, clear-headed, and present in your body.
5. Wear comfortable, loose clothes
Choose clothes that:
• Are easy to move in
• Give access to the tattoo area
• You don’t mind getting ink on
Loose, dark, or old clothes are perfect. Comfort helps you stay relaxed for longer sessions.
6. Bring a clean beach towel
A clean towel you don’t mind staining can be very useful.
It can help with comfort and support.
7. Bring sugary snacks
Tattooing uses energy.
Small sugary snacks (like fruit, juice, chocolate, or candy) can give you a quick boost during breaks and help keep your blood sugar stable.
8. Prepare mentally
Your mindset matters just as much as your body.
You can prepare by:
• Practicing meditation or Yoga Nidra
• Doing breathing exercises
• Learning to listen to your body
The calmer you are, the easier the experience will feel.
9. No numbing creams (Switzerland law)
In Switzerland, numbing creams are not allowed, so this isn’t an option to consider.
The good news?
You can always communicate during the session. If you need a break, a different position, or a moment to breathe, just say so. Your comfort is important, and we’ll work together to make the experience as smooth as possible while still making good progress on your tattoo.
Final thoughts
Your tattoo session is a collaboration between your body, your mind, and your artist.
By taking care of yourself before and during the appointment, you help create the best possible conditions for:
• A better experience
• Better healing
• Better results
If you ever have questions, concerns, or special needs, don’t hesitate to communicate. Your comfort and safety always come first.
